Botox Injection

Botox, also known as botulinum toxin type A or onabotulinumtoxinA, is created from the bacteria that causes botulism. When botulinum toxins are injected into your body, it blocks any nerve activity in your muscles, which causes a temporary reduction in muscle activity.

Botox is commonly known for it’s anti-aging benefits such as the lessening of the appearance of facial wrinkles, but it’s most commonly used for medical conditions such as severe spasms in the neck muscles, severe underarm sweating, and muscle spasms in the arms and hands. It can also be used to help treat certain eye muscle conditions caused by nerve disorders, treat overactive bladder and urine leakage caused by nerve disorders such as multiple sclerosis or if you have a spinal cord injury.

People who suffer from chronic migraines at least 15 days per month can also benefit from getting botox injections.

Important information about Botox

When you get a Botox injection, there is a small risk that it can spread to other areas of your body beyond where it was first injected. In rare cases, this has caused life-threatening side effects. If you are experiencing any side effects including drooping eyelids, loss of bladder control, severe muscle weakness, trouble breathing, talking, or swallowing, or if your voice is hoarse contact your doctor immediately. Some side effects can pop up several weeks after your Botox injection.

If this is your first time considering getting a Botox injection, talk to your doctor to determine if you are allergic to the medication. Let your injector know if you have any of the following conditions: myasthenia gravis, Lou Gehrig’s disease, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, trouble swallowing, seizures, heart disease, bleeding problems, facial muscle weakness, if you are going to have surgery in the near future, or if you have received other injections like Myobloc or Dysport.

Botox injections should be administered by a trained healthcare professional and it is recommended to remain with the same injector if possible. If you are switching to a new injector, be sure to inform him or her of your treatment history and when you received your most recent treatment.

How is Botox given?

It is advised to go to a highly trained and experienced health professional to receive your Botox injections. The doctor or nurse administers the Botox via injection into specific muscles of the desired treatment area. Regular treatments every three months to four months is common. If done regularly, results can sometimes last longer.
